The Reason I’m Not Crazy For Loving Monday
Now, wait and hear me out . . .Monday is special because it does something no other day of the week does.
It gives you a fresh start.
Even if you know you have a new start everyday, we all still feel how Monday is the psychological starting block for the week.Today is the day!
It’s your chance to be a slightly better version of who you were last week.
It’s your chance to experiment and try something new. It’s your chance to recalibrate your goals.Today is the day.Let’s roll this into action.
Most peoples’ goals center around 3 things:
Fitness, Career, Travel/Bucket list. Here are things you can do to move toward any of those in 2 minutes or less.
2 Minute Action
Do pushups, burpees, or lunges for 2 minutes.Set up a meeting with your supervisor (or mentor, or colleague, or professor, etc.) to talk about your future and how to get where you want to go.Look at your calendar, pick a date in the future (it can be really far in the future, that’s fine) for your bucket list item. Create a savings plan, invite your friends, and make it real!Today is Monday!Get out of the gate strong, today.
Give This Up And You Can Go After Anything You Want
Getting stuck is normal.Having “writer’s block” is normal. Not seeing the next step or the solution is normal.
The hard part isn’t always thinking through the problem.
The hard part is usually just starting to move in a direction that’s close.Once you’re moving, it’s harder for others to tell you why it won’t work.
Once you’re moving, the game is just about adjusting the course to suit your mission.
Give up the idea that the trajectory has to look like what you think or want it to look like: because it will never look that way.If you give up this idea or predetermined vision for what your path will look like, you can actually focus on what’s ahead and how to adapt.
2 Minute Action
Do sit-ups for 2 minutes.Email your boss to tell them about the idea you have.Write a blog post instead of the whole first chapter of your novel.None of these things are huge or what people imagine themselves doing to move toward their goals, and that’s exactly the point.Just 2 minutes can get the ball rolling, and that’s all you need.Don’t get caught up on how you roll the ball, because that’s just an inconsequential distraction.
Don’t Quit Your Job. Here’s What You Do
What are you going to think about before you die?Did I create enough value for shareholders?Did I take enough time for myself?Did I work too hard for someone else?Probably not. You'll probably be more concerned about how much time you spent working for someone else’s dream. If that thought doesn’t create enough urgency to take action on your dreams, I don’t know what is.You only have the rest of your life. This reminder is for you, so you can remind yourself later.
2 Minute Action:
Create a quick list of small things you can do to start moving in the direction of your dreams.“Quit my job” is too big and complicated.“Find a supplier for Van Gogh tie fabric,” is more reasonable. Its up to you to make the time to start. It only takes 2 minutes.
